Morning Smile

A girl on the bus smiled this morning, which is rare in and of itself, but it reminded me of the smile of a friend from long ago.

I remembered my friend's infectious smile and hilarious sense of humor, and smiled to myself.

Then it hit me, she's not alive anymore. She died this past year of unnatural causes.

And I was immediately stunned by the brevity and uncertainty of life.
