Our English professors took us (the English major seniors) out to dinner tonight. We went to a historical landmark in Marion - The Hostess House - and had a 3 course meal. Each table had at least one professor. I realized that I like everyone in my major that is my age. I get along with them all, an amazing feat for me, the former Hater-of-All-Mankind.
The profs gave out mock awards - you know the kind, it's the same idea that my dorm had freshman and sophomore years. It can be fun, if everybody gets the jokes. I got two very good ones, and two very normal ones. Normal first: the only "My Name Rhymes with Banana" in the department; the "I survived Dr. B-----" award for having her four or five times in my college career, all of which I enjoyed.
My favorite, and the one which confuses me most as to how any of my profs know this, was the "Professors Falsely Believe I'm Quiet" award. It's true; all my friends know it. Who else knows?
The final one, the one that won me a lot of sympathy was the "I survived Dr. R----" award, for having him six times in the course of four years. That award was actually a double award - it had two shields of honor taped together, because being around him that much, even the other professors realize, is a chore (he's very scatter-brained and self-assured) and an incredible feat.
I do like him much better after not seeing him for an entire semester. And he did seem rather indignant for me when he found out I didn't get an assistantship or fellowship or any sort of financial aid for grad school.
He said, "That's just awful. Didn't they read my recommendation letter? I wrote one, didn't I?"
I slowly shook my head..."You said you would and you didn't."
He laughed loudly and awkwardly, "Well no wonder they didn't give you anything."
"I'll blame you for the rest of my life," I said.
He laughed again..."Didn't I write one? Guess not. Ha!" He kept on laughing.
I had a good time tonight. I always enjoy being with professors out of their element, seeing how they interact on a person-to-person level. It's refreshing to find out they are real people after all.
A good time to call it quits - this post, this semester, this school.
I'm satisfied.
